Westview Middle School Weekly Update

“The Intramural Championship game was a great success. Not only did all the student-athletes have fun, the parents, and the student body were able to witness a game built on sportsmanship, integrity, community, and fun. The eighth grade players from both the Maroon and Purple teams created a sense of pride and joy. Every player attempted shots, pulled down rebounds, and got a ton of cheers from the stands including one of the smallest players on the court. The game was a close game until the final 10 minutes when Purple was able to sink a couple of deep threes to extend the score. The game finished with Purple winning the game. To top it off Jacob Foot will be able to leave Westview Middle School by being a 3x Intramural champion. Our eighth graders ensured all the players on their teams had a place to belong. They taught the sixth and seventh graders skills that they learned throughout the travel season, supported them, and showed true patience. As intramurals are an introduction to the game of basketball and for some students the only opportunity they will have to play basketball or wear a uniform with their school name on it, the Intramural Boys Basketball 2023 season was a complete success and reminds us of why it all matters.” ~Coach Meka Lawson

“The Wildcats finished the season Saturday when they took on Lyons. The boys played two fantastic games and were able to end the year with two quality wins. Our players have shown great attitude and effort all season long and it was nice to see all of their hard work pay off on the court. This group was a pleasure to coach and all have bright futures ahead of them. We hope to see our players continue their basketball careers at the high school level next year. Go Wildcats!” ~Coach Martenson
Waffles the Wildcat makes an appearance at this year’s annual Staff vs. 8th grade volleyball game on Friday morning. It was a great match-up and there’s always room for some fun on the day before a break!
Westview is truly fortunate to have veteran math teachers Mr. Kath and Ms. Benjaminson as long-time members of our Wildcat family. These two outstanding teachers have worked together as a team for the past 17 years at Westview and have made tremendous contributions to our students, our extracurricular programs, our sports programs, and the Longmont Community.
7th graders give their “Passion Project” presentations in Language Arts Core X class. Students were asked to explore a topic of their choice and create a presentation to share with the class. Fern Lemmon (above) talked about fashion through the decades and Liam West (below) gave his classmates the scoop on the best ski runs at each resort in Summit County. Other topics included creating watercolors with native plants, business plans for a Taylor Swift-themed swag store, the history of horses, disc golf, and the creation of a new playing card game. “These presentations have been wonderful and the kids are so proud of their learning.” ~Ms. Rude, 7th grade Blue Language Arts
Students from the 6th grade Blue team work on puzzles created by Mr. Cribby’s 7th grade Core X class. The puzzles involve trying to make squares from various tangram shapes. A tangram is a Chinese puzzle made by cutting a square into five triangles, a square, and a rhomboid which are capable of being recombined in many different figures.
Juan Gomez Andrade and Dreyson Blase (above) take a look at the recent animal activity (deer, elk, moose, bear, turkey) captured on their wildlife cameras during a recent Plains to the Park expedition in Rocky Mountain National Park. Wild turkeys (below) were photographed in their natural environment on a previous trip to the park.  #WestviewSTEM
