  • Late Start Day Wednesday, April 3rd: Late Start Schedule 4/3

        The National Association for Music Education has designated March as “Music In Our Schools Month.” The purpose of this observance is to raise awareness of the extreme importance and value of music education for children of all ages. At Westview, we celebrate our exceptional music programs and the extraordinary teachers who make them happen year-round. Throughout this month, we have featured student interviews focused on how Westview music has impacted their middle school experience. Please enjoy the last of these above, and Mr. Spencer’s commentary about Westview Music below!
        Meet 2024 Westview Spelling Bee Champion 8th grader Isaac Landers. His first-place finish at Westview earned him a spot in the 2024 Boulder Valley Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 16th. Only the top 50 spellers in grades 3-8 from across the entire St. Vrain Valley and Boulder Valley School Districts were invited to compete. This was not Isaac’s first Spelling Bee rodeo; he attended the same event five years ago after winning the Bee at Hygiene Elementary in 3rd grade. This time, he made it all the way to the fourth round with just 20 spellers left. We asked Isaac to share his experience: “Yes, I was nervous! To study, they send you a list of around 500 words. I have someone read the words to me and then I practice spelling them out loud. At the Bee, you’re allowed to ask some questions- repeat, definition, language of origin, part of speech, in a sentence, and other pronunciations. My words were ‘eagerly,’ ‘accolade,’ ‘vehicular,’ and the word I got out on was ‘corm.’ I never heard that word before. It’s a part of a plant. I thought it sounded like ‘corn’ so I had no idea how to spell it so I just guessed, and then it literally turned out to be just c-o-r-m.” What is Isaac’s secret for Spelling Bee success? “I take my time and get them to repeat the word a lot so I have time to think about it and keep hearing the word before I answer. If there’s another Bee in high school I would enter it.” Westview is very proud of Isaac and his impressive accomplishment!

        6th graders in Mr. Powley’s Social Studies classes are learning about the impact that natural disasters and extreme weather have on the people living in regions affected by these events.
        7th graders in Mr. Crane’s Social Studies classes recreated the work of Michaelangelo by creating their own masterpieces on the “ceiling” during their study of the Renaissance.
        8th graders in Ms. Ellis’s U.S. History classes are learning about the western expansion of the United States from 1815 to 1850.
        7th graders enjoy the “Alaskan Pipeline” activity during Challenge Day on Monday, March 25th. Students must work together to move a golf ball from one side of the gym to the other via PVC pipe and finish by dropping the ball in a bucket. The team with the most balls in the bucket wins the competition.
        P.E. students in all grades begin a Pickleball unit by learning fundamentals such as backhand, forehand, and ball control. This super-fun game which started as a backyard pastime in 1965 has become one of our nation’s fastest-growing sports for people of all ages.
        6th grade Language Arts teacher Ms. Kocjancic invented a way for 6 Blue and 6 Silver to do March Madness with books! Students excitedly look at the bracket for the first time…
