Hundreds turn out for chilly Happy Smackah in Longmont

McIntosh Lake was surrounded by 3.1 miles of smiles Saturday morning, as hundreds of participants turned out for the annual Happy Smackah 5K fun run.

The sixth annual event — which each year raises money for a St. Vrain Valley School District staff member and/or student who is in need because of a health-related hardship — was expected to draw 800 participants who had registered in advance.

And, despite chilly, damp conditions, another 85 had signed up Saturday morning, said organizer Karen Cribby, whose husband, Dan, who was the inspiration and beneficiary of the inaugural event.
